Report from the field:
In Dallas about two weeks ago, 167 more clerks and 35 mail handlers were excessed. There was a town hall meeting with counselors present for the announcement, according to an employee that was present. Some employees are having to relocate as far away as Alburquerque. We've received 5 clerks turned carriers at my post office in Dallas. Three became injured within the first week. Another one I'm not sure about either. However, the guy clerk came right in without incident and is delivering his route in 8 hours. He's a keeper. The TE's we had are gone - they've been given their removal notices. With all the conversions from clerks to carriers, the APWU is rapidly losing membership and dues and the NALC is rapidly gaining membership and dues. I'm hearing talk at the local level that the APWU will at some point be forced to merge with another postal labor union. However, the Mail Handlers seem to do OK with a smaller union, depending on who you ask.
