This is getting ridiculous! The Branch 500 (NALC Local 500, Harrisburg, PA) Rapid Response Facebook page has reported yet another LLV fire, this one in Ohio. There have been two other LLV fires reported in the news within the last ten days. Perhaps the hot summer is prompting more LLV fires, but plenty have already burned during the last several years in all seasons. There have been dozens and dozens – perhaps hundreds of such fires – reported over the last decade. Yet, at least publicly, postal labor unions nor the U.S. Postal Service have adequately addressed the situation since many thousands of the suspect vehicles are still in use. Of course it would be very problematic to replace such a large number of postal vehicles, but they are going up in flames on a regular basis. Luckily it’s relatively easy to escape a burning LLV. However, this huge safety and liability issue needs to be addressed soon before a postal employee (or bystander) is horrifically injured or killed.
